GP2Lap FAQ. Last updated: 24-Sep-1999 ============================================== ===== GENERAL ================================ ============================================== Q. Can I run GP2Lap under Win95/98? (I have to because of my Pnp ) A. Yes, you can, but it can cause crashes while running GP2 in a dos box and saving files with it. This should be fixed in v1.10 BETA, so please try that version if you're having trouble running GP2Lap under Windows. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I tried running GP2Lap in DOS, but it just freezes. How can I get it to work? A. You probably forgot to load a DOS sound driver. Try to run GP2 on its own. If that doesn't work and "gp2.exe nosound" works alright (although without sound), then this is probably the case. If GP2 works well on its own and not with GP2Lap, and you have Win98, then make sure you have downloaded GP2Lap 1.09, which contains a fix for a problem with these symptoms. If you've tried everything and it still doesn't work, enable logDebug and logDebugFlush in gp2lap.cfg with logDebugName="freeze.log", and start gp2 with "gp2.exe log:safe". Then run gp2lap, and after it freezes reset your computer and send us the files gp2log.txt and freeze.log, along with a clear description of the symptoms and your system configuration. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. When I run GP2Lap, I am forced to choose VGA mode. Is this just because I don't have much RAM (8mb), or is there something else I should do? I have tried turning off all the options in the .cfg file, but it still will not let me select SVGA... A. Most probably not enough RAM. You need at least 16MB. When using GP2Video you need about 32MB. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I think pressing one of the keys causes the sound of the tyres to disappear. Is this a bug in GP2Lap? A. You've probably pressed '-' (right of the '0') by accident. Press '=' (with the '+' above it) to get the sound back. ============================================== ===== LOGGING ================================ ============================================== Q. I downloaded GP2lap but I don't know how to use it. I mean, I activated it in the game, but how can I see the info from my saved files? A. You can use HOF2Lap to see the logged information. Use the -d option with it. You can also use this line in the gp2lap.cfg file: logDebug = 1 This will show most of the info in the gp2lap.log file. Q. How do I save the so called .GLx file? A. It is created automatically upon saving a race (.QRx, .RAx, .CHx) if the .cfg contains the line: logGLX = 1 The file name will be the same as the race, but with a .GLx extension. Q. When I view the .GLx file it doesn't show the computer cars. A. Put these lines in the .cfg file: logGLX = 1 logCC = 1 ============================================== ===== AT THE LINE ============================ ============================================== Q. Can you put the track map next to At The Line? A. Yes, we might add an option for this in a later version. Q. Can you show differences at the bottom of the screen just like on tv? A. No. ============================================== ===== IPX related ============================ ============================================== Q. i have a problem. i don't know how to connect my game with my friends game. i have a network here, and i'm used to these stuff but with Gp2 there's no network icon. Anyway i entered the "linkup menu" i choose direct link and when i press "connect" the game crashes automatically. A. In preparation to starting a link, you have to modify your configuration file. (by default gp2lap.cfg in the same directory as gp2lap.exe) Specify the following in gp2lap.cfg: UseIPXLink = 1 ; tell gp2lap to start the link MyLinkName = "YourName Here" ; your link name within GP2Lap Now follow the steps described in gp2lap.txt. If a connection has been established by GP2Lap, GP2 will be started automatically. Now we have to do the same within GP2: The normal "Linkup Menu" has been renamed "IPX Linkup Menu". Within the menu you only have to choose between Lead and Follow, just like using serial linking. Now hit "Connect" to start. About the crash: I've experienced that too. And even while running GP2 *alone* (i.e. not using GP2Lap)! So probably GP2 to blame here. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. One thing: i cannot save game in multiplayer game (ipx mode), and GP2 couldn't save the game state (graphics etc.). It wrote simply that it 'Cant find directory'. What's that? A: This seems to happen under plain DOS using the Novell client software (vlm, ipxodi, lsl etc...). It's not affected by the amount of memory currently available. It seems to be a problem with the int 21h extensions provided by vlm!? ... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. In the GP2Lap.txt you mention that you ran it sucessfully in Win95 and DOS. By DOS, what exactly are you referring to? Do you mean starting from an actual pure DOS startup without ever entering Windows? While trying that, all I got was "***IPX: can't find IPX driver". What should I do to get this network link working under DOS? A. Win95's IPX driver is only active while Win95 is being loaded. If you want to use the network link under DOS, you have to load DOS ipx drivers. Maybe your network card has been shipped with some "old" disks containg a "pure DOS" IPX driver? For instance, I have two (rather old) Novell Ethernet cards here (NE2000, ISA 16 bit), with DOS IPX drivers to be found on the Novell Netware 3.x netware client driver disk. Maybe you can try to: - find this disk somewhere, - ask your local dealer, - search the manufacturer's website for DOS drivers to be downloaded. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. The only thing i'm having a problem with is the game in IPX once it is linked. It's fine through the setup, drivers, menus and graphics etc but on starting a race it freezes with the LINK DATA MISMATCH message. This happens whatever I do!! Repairing doesnt help. A. That's a common mistake. Make sure that both copies of GP2 are equal in terms of installed tracks, gp2.exe patch state, etc. The easiest way to achieve this, is simply copying your whole gp2 directory over to the other computer.
